It’s a question that’s been on my mind since Izzy’s last appointment with the Pediatrician, when she got her shots. Do we pierce her ears now, as a baby, or do we wait until she’s old enough to care for them herself? The Dr. recommended that if we do it as a baby, we need to do so before she gets enough coordination to grab at her ears and mess with them during the healing phase. There’s also the fact that if we do it now, her little attention span is short enough that it would only hurt her for a few minutes.
But I don’t know! I barely made it through watching her get her shots, which was for her health. Can I REALLY voluntarily subject her to that pain (even if it IS only for a few seconds) just for the sake of cute?
Even though there are perks to doing it as a baby, there’s also upsides to waiting. We could do it as a sort of rite of passage later. Something special to do with mommy. Get nails done, get ice cream, do a movie, a whole girls day shebang, with the climax being the piercing of the ears.
*sigh* It’s a hard decision, but one that has to be made soon, as Izzy is learning to use her hands better and better every day, so that “unaware” period is quickly coming to a close.
What would you do? What DID you do? How old were you when you got your ears pierced? What was the experience like, if you can remember it?
