So, on this past Saturday, I told you guys about the our cold turkey attempt to wean Izzy from being swaddled to sleep. The first nap was an ordeal. The second nap was another. Bedtime was no different, until I reintroduced her boppy pillow. I put a blanket over it, to create a kind of bowl, and put her in there to sleep. And sleep she did, for about 4 hours. She woke up around 5am to nurse, and then went back to sleep until about 7am.
Her next at-home nap attempt wasn’t until her last nap of the day on Sunday ( 30min power naps in the car on the way to and from church.) I put her in her crib, in the boppy, unswaddled, with Bizzy, and I left, and closed the door. And she didn’t make a peep! Went right to sleep! Byron and I actually had to go and wake her up, so that she could have a few hours of waketime before bedtime. Fast forward to bed time, and the same thing happened! Last night, Izzy slept from 9pm to a little after 4am. That’s a 7 hour stretch, the longest she’s ever done!
I’m thinking that maybe she’s able to sleep more soundly because she’s not struggling to get unswaddled. I noticed that when she sleeps unswaddled in the boppy, she stays in the boppy. But when I would put her in there swaddled, I would have to keep putting her back in, because she would wiggle herself down until she wasn’t on it anymore, in an attempt to get free.
I just put her down for her first morning nap, so I am hoping that today’s naps are as successful as her last have been!
It was really, really hard those first few naps. I hate hearing Izzy cry, so it was hard to not just say “forget it, let’s just swaddle her.” But now that’s she SO mobile, the swaddling was (I think) getting to be a little hazardous, because once she had wiggled around for a while, it always ended up bunched around her top half, and up near her face, which brings in the danger of suffocation.
With her sleeping “free” now, she has to wear pajamas, because she won’t keep a blanket over herself, and I don’t want her to get cold in the night. At least now I have a use for them though. Most of them were given to us, and in a 6-9 month size, so she’s just now able to wear them, but it was way too hot to wear those AND be swaddled.
Anyway though, Happy Monday!
