It’s no big secret that I’ve wanted a garden. Even before we bought the house, a garden was ever-present on my mind. When I was little, I loved the constant availability of fresh tomatoes, cucumber, and various out fruits and veggies that our huge garden provided. But, unlike my dad, I’m no farmer! And unlike our childhood home, where we an acre or two of land at our disposal, our house sits on what I think is about a 1/4 of an acre.Which is a big yard, but who wants to take up all of their yard space with a garden?
Enter Square Foot Gardening. This wasn’t the original plan, but once we ran across it, Byron and I both got very excited about to prospect of having a garden with a large variety of things, in only a 4’x4′ space. We checked out a few experiences, bought the book, and went to work!
In our 4’x4′ garden, we planted 2 types of tomato, bell pepper, jalapenos, banana peppers, squash, cucumbers, onions, strawberries, watermelon, cantaloupe, cabbage, romaine lettuce, and mustard greens. It will be about 2 months before anything starts producing, but I think it will be really amazing watching it grow! We decided to use transplants this time, since we didn’t know what we were doing, but next time, we will start everything from seed!
